1. Foundations are key 🏗️

One of the biggest lessons agility handlers learn—sometimes the hard way—is that rushing into obstacles without solid foundations leads to frustration later on.

Many people think agility starts with jumps and tunnels, but the best agility teams start with handling skills, communication, and body awareness before they ever introduce equipment.

✅ What to focus on instead:

  • Teaching connection and handling cues before full sequences.
  • Practicing movement-based skills like forward focus and following handling.
  • Keeping training fun! If your dog loves learning, agility will be easier for both of you.

2. The 3 C’s are vital: Connect, Cue, Commit 🔄

The 3 C’s of agility—Connect, Cue, Commit—are the foundation of handling. Mastering these will make your agility runs smoother and prevent refusals, off-courses, and hesitation.

  • Connect – Your dog needs to know you’re maintaining a connection with them. It’s not necessarily eye contact, but at least showing the side of your face.
  • Cue – Give clear, timely cues with your 7 handling elements in sync.
  • Commit – Once your dog commits to an obstacle, trust them to complete it before giving the next cue.

🚀 Pro tip: If your dog hesitates or takes off-course obstacles, check if you’re missing one of the 3 C’s!

3. Reward your dog! 🎉

It sounds obvious, but many handlers don’t reward enough or at the right time in agility. If your dog nails a skill, let them know immediately!

💡 Best reward strategies for agility:

  • Timing matters – Reward as soon as your dog does something right. Delayed rewards create confusion.
  • Mix it up – Some dogs love treats, others love play. Find what motivates your dog most!
  • Reward effort, not just perfection – If your dog is trying their best, reinforce their effort to build confidence.

4. Understanding lines: Your dog’s path vs. yours 📏

Agility isn’t just about getting from one obstacle to the next—it’s about how your dog gets there.

Many handlers focus on where they’re going instead of where their dog needs to go. This results in wide turns, missed jumps, and off-course mistakes.

🏆 Key tip: Train your eye to see parallel lines

  • The dog’s line: The natural path your dog takes based on your cues and the obstacles.
  • Parallel lines: Your movement should be parallel to the dog’s intended line, helping to guide them smoothly.

When you plan a course, don’t just think about where you’re running—think about the line your dog needs to follow to keep things efficient and clear and run parallel to that.

5. Train the dog in front of you 👀

One of the best agility tips ever? Work with the dog you have, not the dog you wish you had.

Every dog is different. Some are fast and independent, others need confidence-building. Instead of trying to fit your dog into a specific training method, adapt your approach to their needs.

🔑 How to train smarter:

  • Observe how your dog naturally moves and reacts.
  • If something isn’t working, try a new approach—don’t just repeat the same mistake.
  • Keep training sessions short, fun, and tailored to your dog’s learning style.
